These are photos of typical adverse effects of using acrylic latex, tar, or other asphalt products often mistakenly used to seal steel roofs or concrete. Unlike SANI-TRED products, acrylic latex products are water soluble and as such are not water-proof! The good news is that acrylic latex products bond very well to steel! The bad news is that acrylic latex products actually absorb and retain corrosive water like a sponge, shrink severely, crack, peels, and in themselves are the cause of massive corrosion damage to steel! Acrylic latex products do not bond well to concrete and easily detaches from concrete. Standing water will actually break down and eventually dissolve acrylic latex and is the cause of detachment from concrete!

The greatest mystery about acrylic latex coatings is how or why are they being marketed, sold, or used for waterproofing. Latex products were originally designed and used for indoor coatings such as interior home wall paints for this simple reason, they are not water proof! You figure it out!

Vermin such as rats, mice, cock roaches, grass hoppers and crickets are attracted to acrylic latex products and readily eat them! They must be tasty, maybe like kids eating Elmer’s Glue?

The good news is that SANI-TRED products taste terrible! Nothing wants to eat them! SANI-TRED permanently bonds to all prepared steel and concrete surfaces, is completely waterproof, prevents corrosion, and will not crack, peel, or detach! Remember, SANI-TRED is the real grain bin sealing product!

Step by Step Grain Bin Waterproofing & Repair:

The following steps will show you How to Waterproof a grain bin with Sani-Tred.

Products Needed: PermaFlex, LRB (Liquid Rubber Base) and TAV (Thickening Activator)

1. The first thing you would do is prepare the substrate. Remove any loose deteriorated substrate, make sure the substrate is clean, dry, free of any previous applied products, and foreign matter.

If the grain bin has a previous applied product on the exterior that likely cannot be removed, one can either apply Sani-Tred products on the interior of the bin or over the existing material with the LRB/TAV at greater thickness (bridging beyond the existing material).

The photo below shows the galvanized steel & concrete after it has been sand blasted in order to remove a previous applied products.

2. Prime approx 3″-6″ out onto the slab and approx 3″-6″ up onto the bin using 1 coat of PermaFlex (240 sq ft per gal).

(3.14 x diameter of grain bin) / 240 = gallons of PermaFlex needed.




3. Apply a 1-1/4″ diameter caulk bead of LRB/TAV mixture (Liquid Rubber Base, Thickening Activator) where the bin meets the slab. 2-parts LRB is mixed with 1-part TAV to create the thickest mixture possible (approx the same viscosity as silicone caulk).

4. Topcoat using 1 coat of PermaFlex (240 sq ft per gal).
