Tank Waterproofing

Tank Waterproofing with SANI-TRED: A Comprehensive Solution for Long-Lasting Protection

Tanks are essential structures used in various industries for storing liquids, chemicals, and other materials. However, over time, tanks are prone to leaks, corrosion, and other forms of deterioration that can compromise their integrity and safety. Proper tank waterproofing is crucial to prevent these issues and extend the lifespan of the tank. SANI-TRED offers a comprehensive waterproofing solution specifically designed to protect tanks from leaks, corrosion, and structural degradation, ensuring they remain functional and safe for years to come.

The Importance of Tank Waterproofing

Tanks are used in a wide range of applications, including water storage, chemical storage, wastewater treatment, and more. Regardless of their specific use, tanks must be kept in optimal condition to prevent contamination, maintain structural integrity, and ensure the safety of the stored materials. Effective waterproofing is a critical component of tank maintenance for several reasons:

  • Leak Prevention: Leaks can lead to the loss of valuable contents, contamination of the surrounding environment, and costly repairs. Waterproofing helps prevent leaks by creating a seamless, impermeable barrier that keeps liquids contained within the tank.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Tanks, especially those made of metal, are susceptible to corrosion over time. Exposure to moisture, chemicals, and other environmental factors can accelerate the corrosion process, leading to weakened structural integrity. Waterproofing coatings protect the tank's surface from corrosion, extending its lifespan.
  • Structural Integrity: Tanks are often subject to physical stress, temperature fluctuations, and chemical exposure. These factors can cause cracks, erosion, and other forms of damage that compromise the tank's structural integrity. Waterproofing helps reinforce the tank's surface, preventing damage and ensuring long-term durability.
  • Compliance and Safety: In many industries, tanks must meet strict regulatory standards for safety and environmental protection. Proper waterproofing ensures that tanks comply with these standards, reducing the risk of accidents, spills, and environmental harm.

SANI-TRED: The Ultimate Solution for Tank Waterproofing

SANI-TRED is a trusted name in the waterproofing industry, known for its high-performance products designed to provide durable and long-lasting protection. The SANI-TRED system is specifically engineered to address the unique challenges associated with tank waterproofing, offering a versatile and effective solution for various types of tanks, including concrete, metal, fiberglass, and more.

Key Components of the SANI-TRED System for Tank Waterproofing

The SANI-TRED system includes three primary products, each formulated to provide maximum protection and durability for tanks:

  1. PermaFlex™: PermaFlex™ is the cornerstone of the SANI-TRED system. This liquid rubber coating deeply penetrates the pores of concrete, metal, and other substrates, creating a flexible, waterproof barrier that prevents leaks and corrosion. PermaFlex™ is known for its excellent adhesion, flexibility, and long-lasting protection, making it ideal for tank waterproofing.
  2. LRB (Liquid Rubber Base): LRB is used to fill and seal cracks, joints, and seams in the tank surface. This thick, viscous liquid cures to form a tough, rubbery finish that effectively seals even the most stubborn leaks. LRB is particularly useful for addressing areas where movement or shifting might occur, such as expansion joints or areas with significant stress.
  3. TAV (Thickening Activator): TAV is mixed with LRB to create a thicker consistency, allowing for easier application on vertical or overhead surfaces, such as the walls and ceiling of tanks. This combination ensures that all areas of the tank are thoroughly sealed and protected from water infiltration and corrosion.

How the SANI-TRED System Works

The SANI-TRED system is designed to be both effective and easy to apply, making it suitable for a wide range of tank waterproofing projects. Here’s a detailed look at how the system is applied to tanks:

Step 1: Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is essential for the success of the SANI-TRED system. This involves several key steps:

  • Remove Loose Material: Begin by removing any loose or crumbly material from the tank surface. Use a wire brush or scraper to clear away any unstable material.
  • Clean the Surface: Thoroughly clean the substrate to remove dirt, debris, oils, rust, and any previously applied products. A pressure washer or sandblasting may be necessary to achieve a clean, uniform surface. This step is crucial for ensuring optimal adhesion of the SANI-TRED products.
  • Dry the Surface: Ensure that the substrate is completely dry before proceeding. Moisture can interfere with the adhesion of the SANI-TRED products, so it’s important to allow the surface to dry thoroughly.
  • Inspect for Foreign Matter: Check the surface for any foreign matter that could compromise the bond of the waterproofing products. Ensure that the surface is smooth and free of contaminants.

Step 2: Priming the Surface

Once the substrate is properly prepared, the next step is to prime the surface with PermaFlex™. This step is essential for ensuring a strong bond between the substrate and the waterproofing materials.

  • Apply PermaFlex™: Apply one coat of PermaFlex™ at a rate of 240 square feet per gallon. Use a roller or brush to ensure even coverage. For porous surfaces like concrete, two prime coats may be necessary to ensure complete coverage and adhesion.
  • Drying Time: Allow the primer to dry completely. This typically takes a few hours, depending on the ambient temperature and humidity. Ensure that the primer is fully cured before proceeding to the next step.

Step 3: Patching and Profiling

After priming, it’s time to patch and profile any joints, seams, cracks, holes, and rough areas using the LRB/TAV mixture. This step ensures that all imperfections are sealed, preventing leaks and further damage.

  • Mixing the Compound: Combine 2 parts LRB with 1 part TAV to create a thick, caulk-like mixture. This mixture is ideal for filling and sealing cracks and seams in the tank.
  • Application:
    • For wall/floor junctions, apply a 1-inch diameter bead of the LRB/TAV mixture.
    • For most cracks and seams, use a 3/4-inch diameter bead.
  • Smoothing the Surface: Use LRB by itself as a liquid membrane to smooth out rough surfaces and ensure a uniform, even surface for the topcoat application.

Step 4: Applying the Topcoat

The final step in the waterproofing process is applying the topcoat. This layer provides additional protection and seals the entire surface, ensuring a durable and watertight finish.

  • Apply PermaFlex™ Topcoat: Apply a topcoat of PermaFlex™ at a rate of 240 square feet per gallon. Use a roller or brush to ensure even coverage. The topcoat can be applied in the color of your choice, allowing you to customize the appearance of the tank.
  • Chemical Resistance: If the tank will be exposed to chemicals, consider applying an additional coat of a 2-part epoxy pool paint over the PermaFlex™ topcoat. This provides extreme chemical resistance and ensures the longevity of the tank lining.
  • Curing Time: Allow the PermaFlex™ topcoat to cure completely before putting the tank back into service. Depending on environmental conditions, this can typically be done the following day, but not on the same day as the topcoat application.
