Causes of Mold and Mildew

Mold is a common household problem. Though many people do not take the molds and mildew seriously, but actually they can damage your property and health. Both the mold and mildew are harmful. Normally people find it difficult to distinguish between these two. Mildew is a form of mold and its color it white. But the mold can appear in a variety of colors.

High Humidity  

If the weather continues to remain humid for a couple of days, mold and mildew will start growing in your home. If it continues for a long time, it will start growing on the walls, surfaces, and chairs due to the wet air. If your home is not ventilated properly, it will keep reoccurring depending on the weather condition. To avoid the buildup molds and mildew, you should try to maintain the humidity level between thirty percent and fifty percent. If your area is prone to humidity, you can use a dehumidifier to maintain the desired level of the humidity.  Open your windows and run the ceiling fans to keep the environment dry as well.

Flood

Flood is one of the major causes of mold and mildew buildup. If your home is affected by a flood, you might notice the mold within a few days. If your house will be wet for a long due to the flood, it will create a favorable environment for the molds to build up. Remember that molds can develop within twenty-four hours on wet surfaces. To avoid it, you will have to keep the environment dry.

Poor Ventilation

Poor ventilation can cause mold growth. Your basement, bathroom, laundry rooms, kitchen, and any other room that are not popularly ventilated are prone to mold buildup. In that case, you need to install a fan in those areas to allow air circulation. Opening the windows will also be an ideal option. You just need to ventilate the room to avoid the possibility.

Leaking Pipes

Water leaks are the common cause of mold growth. If you will not take care of the water leaks and will not repair it immediately, you can notice the mold growth in no time. It will keep reoccurring until the problem is not resolved. Therefore, whenever you notice any water leakage, try to fix it fast to avoid the mold growth.

Leaking Roofs

Like the water leakage, leaking roofs also cause mold and mildew growth. The worst thing is that you might not be able to discover such leakage until the visible mold growth. But whenever you notice mold buildup, fix it to avoid the re-occurrence. You can also check your attics regularly to find out any leakage.

In addition, any water storage, leakage, wet basement, and the gutter system can increase the moisture level and can cause the mold and mildew growth. You need to eliminate such sources to reduce the re-occurrence.
